Clinical Nutrition Services

Clinical Nutritionists (registered and licensed dietitians) with expertise in nutrition disorders provide complete assessment of nutrition status (including anthropometrics), short- or long-term nutrition intervention and counseling to any pediatric patient and his or her parents/caregivers. Consultation is offered in
both inpatient and outpatient areas.

Clinical Nutritionists are also involved in research projects and the teaching to medical and health care professional students. Nutritionists may be contacted weekdays at 501-364-1264. On weekends and holidays a clinical nutritionist is in the hospital from 9 am to 1 pm and can be paged by the operator for questions
needing immediate attention.

Patients are accepted in the Nutrition Clinic on referral from a private physician or ACH staff. Written reports are sent back to the physician after each Nutrition Clinic visit. Available services include:

  • Weight management: provides assessment and monitoring.
  • Feeding problems: related to developmental problems, physical disabilities and/or psychosocial problems as well as normal infant/toddler feeding problems.
  • Therapeutic diets: related to diseases such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, PKU (phenylketonuria) or other inherited errors of metabolism.
  • Dietary management of other chronic or acute conditions requiring changes in the family’s food habits that will need monitoring over time.
  • Health promotion through dietary and lifestyle changes of life-long eating patterns.
  • Information to prevent childhood obesity.
  • Home health/nutrition: development and monitoring of formula regimens for nutritional maintenance; tube feeding; parenteral solutions and food-drug interactions.
  • Nutritional assessment/special anthropometry: provides analysis of intake, estimation of needs and body composition measurements (anthropometry). Computerized calculation of individual nutrient intake, measurement and interpretation of energy expenditure (indirect calorimetry), and special anthropometrics (including skinfold thickness, mid-arm circumference) available as needed.

Note: This clinic is available to your child by physician referral. Talk with your child’s physician and tell him/her you would like to be referred to ACH. Have the doctor contact the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Physician Referral Services Department to make a referral. If your child does not have a regular physician, please call 501-364-5901 and we will be happy to recommend one in your area.
